No vertical angle
The diagram below shows 45 degrees counter clockwise from the horizontal baseline. The node is placed 10 units along that line and the 5 units 90 degrees from the produced point.

30 degree vertical angle
The example below introduces a 30 degree vertical angle, which has the effect of angling the 10 unit line 30 degrees up or out of the screen. The effect on the ground is to shorten the projected distance to 10 X cos(30) = 8.66025 or 8.7 rounded off as above.
